Ethan BauchDorian Quintet's New Bassoonist

The newest member of the Dorian Wind Quintet, Ethan Bauch grew up in Long Island, New York in a musical household. His late father Jason Bauch, was a renowned Cantor and composer as well as a music teacher in the Long Island public schools. Ethan's violinist brother Ronnie, is a founding member and Managing Director of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and their younger brother Aaron, played the piano.

Ethan began his instrumental studies at the age of 8 on the piano and the recorder. At 10, he joined the school band on the clarinet, and at 12 he began studying the bassoon with Maurice Pachman, principal bassoonist of the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra. Two years later, he entered the pre-college division at Juilliard as a student of Harold Goltzer, first bassoonist of the New York Philharmonic. Ethan continued on in the “upper school” at age 16, after having won the Great Neck Symphony Competition, as well as the Long Island Youth Orchestra Scholarship Competition.

Mr. Bauch was an early and avid fan of chamber music, joining ensembles wherever and whenever possible. At Juilliard, he performed with no less than 3 different woodwind quintets per year, and as many mixed ensembles as he could get involved with. He was a frequent continuo player for the oboe students of Lois Wann, often participating in their lessons. He was awarded a graduate teaching fellowship in the woodwind chamber music department at Juilliard during his senior year there, the first undergraduate in the school’s history to have received this distinguished honor. That same year, Bauch was awarded the Elsie W. Naumberg Scholarship for his excellence as an orchestral wind player, and made his New York debut in a nationally televised appearance as soloist with the New York Philharmonic in a Young People’s Concert directed by Michael Tilson Thomas.

Having completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees at Juilliard, Bauch began performing professionally as member, soloist and guest with various ensembles including the Orchestra da Camera, the Musica Aeterna Orchestra, the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, the Arioso Wind Quintet, the Corelli Ensemble, the New York Chamber Soloists, the Festival Winds and the St. Lukes Chamber Orchestra.

Mr. Bauch has maintained an active career as a free-lance bassoonist in the New York metropolitan area, performing in a variety of genres and venues. In addition to symphony and chamber concerts, he has performed as a regular guest artist with many of the opera, ballet and Broadway musical orchestras in the area including New York City Ballet, New York City Opera and American Ballet Theatre. His exploits in the realm of commercial recording won him the Most Valuable Player award from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), the presenters of the Grammy Awards. He has appeared on Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman, and the Rosie O'Donnell Show.

Ethan has participated in numerous festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Monadnock Music, the North Country Chamber Players, and most recently, the Institute at Festival Hill at Round Top, Texas as a member of the Dorian Quintet.

Ethan replaces Jane Taylor, a founding member of the Dorian Wind Quintet, who retired in April, 2002. Click here to read more about Ms. Taylor and hear her final performance with the DWQ as broadcast on National Public Radio.
